This is the weblog and information guide to our friend, the Buddhist Zen Master and teacher Gil Jin Lee, affectionately known as "Sunim" who lives on Saipan. Sunim performs prayers and ceremonies for the lost loved ones.

The temple is located near the Banzai Cliffs, where many folks died during World War II. The Zen center is a refuge and a place of prayer for the many families that come to Saipan that want to pay respects for their lost loved ones.

Nearly 60,000 soldiers died or were wounded during WWII. Many thousands of Japanese soldiers died in the battle for Saipan, and countless islanders from the Carolines, Okinawa and other islands did as well. Many US Soldiers died here as well, including the entire first wave of US Marines who came ashore not far from her center. Saipan turns out to be one of the hardest fought battles in all of World War II - a lot of prayers for a lot of souls who passed away here.

Part of the Zen temple's daily activity is to pray for the souls of those departed. And many visitors stop on their way to or from the Banzai cliffs that are nearby, and Buddhist monk Sunim would like to be able to serve them some food during their stops.
